Contact Marshall

The story happens when a 20-year-old named Marshall Acosta was in Toronto shooting a video for his YouTube channel. He was getting random people to be his cameraman for him because the video involved him going to different spots and getting some good shots. And he is waiting around at this one spot. Realistically, he could ask anybody to film for him, but he wanted to pick someone that could fit the role. So, he is waiting at the spot for a good 8 minutes if not 15, and he sees this man: he's got a purple hat on, he's got some purple pants on. He looked pretty dapper. So he points at him and gives him the "come here" motion with his finger and then he tells him just what he needs his help with. He just needs him to record him fingerboarding at this one spot, just five minutes, less than that. And the man goes on to tell him he knows a little bit about fingerboarding. He has a friend that fingerboards too, so he's a little familiar with it. Marshall thought, "Oh, okay, that's very nice." He records for him, and then the guy and Marshall part ways. Marshall didn’t get his name, didn’t get anything on him.

Hours go by, probably six hours go by, and now he's finally making his way back home from Toronto. He's on the train, and they're at the last stop when he sees the man in the purple pants and the purple hat at the same last stop that they were at. So, like a movie, Marshall stands up and everybody else is standing up. And "Him and I just lock eyes," Marshall says and thinks to himself, "That's him, that's the guy!" They get off the train, and within a minute of them walking away, they exchange information, they get each other's Instagrams. Marshall found out that his name was Coe. So Coe and Marshall say goodbye, and Marshall starts making his way home. On his way home, he’s getting a message from Coe, and the message reads: "My friend that does the fingerboarding’s name is Marshall." And he wasn’t talking about me, Marshall claims. So the one guy that I asked to film for me, who happens to know about fingerboards and has a friend who fingerboards, I run into him again hours later, and he gets off at the same stop as me on the train, and he comes to find out that his friend who fingerboards, his name is also Marshall. Not only have I never met another Marshall, but I’ve also never met another Marshall who fingerboards, and I think that is a once-in-a-lifetime story to tell.

The moral or life story could be that some journeys seem destined to happen, and those signs are there to show that this is undeniable. Life can be lived like a movie.

The next story is a little longer, but here we go, says Marshall. This takes place back in May. My friend Yuan and I would frequently, pretty much almost every night, if not every weekend, meet up at night, and we would enjoy ourselves with that Mary-Jane. On this night, it was a little more special because I invited my friend Dorian to join us, but Yuan did not know that Dorian was going to join us. I was going to have Dorian show up at a random point in the night to surprise the both of us. So Dorian came up with a plan to try and scare Yuan into thinking we were about to get robbed when Dorian pulled up, Dorian being the robber. Yuan’s a pretty paranoid guy, so Marshall thought this was going to work out perfectly. So the night finally comes to where this plan is all going to happen. "Yuan and I, whenever we light the 'J,' we would always stop at this one mailbox to light the 'J,' and we would continue our walk past the mailbox. The goal was to have Dorian show up as we're lighting this 'J' at the mailbox and have Dorian pretty much pretend to rob us." Of course, Yuan wouldn’t know that it’s Dorian, and I would, but Marshall would still try to play it up as if they are about to get robbed right now.

So the moment is happening. "We’re walking to the mailbox. I had already told Dorian to start walking toward the mailbox." Dorian’s a tall guy, and he’s got dark clothing on. He’s really pulling off the robbery look. "As we're walking to the mailbox, I noticed these two girls in this parking lot next to the mailbox that we usually light our J at, but I didn't think anything of it, man! So, we get to the mailbox, and I see Dorian at a distance, and he’s making his way. Yuan has no lighter, but thankfully I brought my lighter, and I handed it to him, and Yuan starts to spark up the 'J.' As he is sparking, I hear a voice from the parking lot screaming, 'Yo! Yoo!' and I'm thinking to myself, no?! Not now. This plan cannot go to waste right now. And she says, 'Yo, is that a lighter?' and I'm thinking, oh, no. Everything is about to crumble right in front of us. So, Yuan starts walking towards them to give them the lighter, but instead, I tell him, 'No, you stay right here, okay? I'm going to give them the lighter, and I will come right back.' So in that short amount of time while Marshall ran to give them the lighter and came back, Dorian pulled up, and he wasn’t able to scare Yuan. Because as soon as Marshall went away, Yuan turned around, looked up at the stars, and just sat there. So their big dramatic moment for Dorian to rob Yuan and me was ruined," said Marshall.

That’s not even the story either. The story is not done. "So, these two girls are 16 years old, and they needed my lighter because they were about to do some bong rips in this parking lot, and they were taking so long to get it over with. They were taking so long, and I was not having it. I was giving them so much 'tude' (attitude). I just wanted to have my lighter back. They weren’t even prepared for anything. They just saw we had a lighter, and they said, 'Hey, you guys better wait right here while we do this.' So the three of us were talking to them—Yuan, me, Dorian—and we were all talking to them, and we're just lying to their faces, okay? Dorian is telling them how he's from the 'hood,' he's from Atlanta, and how he's this big bad guy when Dorian’s really not. But that’s what these girls were looking for. These girls were asking us if we were 'hood,' and when I said no, one of the girls gave me a disgusted look, and that's when Dorian spoke up and said he’s from Atlanta, and that's when that girl's entire mood just shifted from disgust to lust.

So, I'll fast-track a little bit. These girls were taking way too long, so I tell Dorian to give them one of the dozen lighters he has in his bag. And he gives them the lighter, and we get out of there. We start walking away, and one of the girls says, 'Hey, you’re just going to walk away? You think you’re in a movie?' And I made a bird noise at them as I was walking away. Moments later, Dorian, Yuan, and I are now at a park. We are now just standing, just in a circle chatting and enjoying this 'J.' In a nearby forest, we see flashlights just getting searched throughout that little forest, and I'm thinking, 'What is going on in there? Who is in there with a flashlight?' And the flashlight turns to one, to then two, to then three. So, I'm thinking, 'Okay, there’s something going on in that forest, but I’m just going to ignore it.' The flashlights disappear a little bit. Then a cop car pulls up alongside the closest road to this park, and they flash their lights in our faces." Marshall doesn’t look in their direction because he feels like if he looks in a cop's direction, it just kind of—it’s like "antagonizing" them, and he doesn't really want to start that. "So, you know, if you see a cop car, just act like they’re a regular car. Why pay attention to them, you know?" And the police flash their lights. They saw that we were three adults, and they kept on driving. They even looked back around, but they didn’t stop.

So that was strange, Marshall goes on. That was very odd. Fast forward to the night after. Technically, the day after because it was still daytime. Marshall was hanging out with his friends Julia, Daniel, and Harry, and they were in the same parking lot that those girls were at the night before. He’s just skateboarding and having fun with his friends when another friend of his, Carson, pulls up in his truck and pulls into the parking lot. Carson just starts chatting with him. He starts talking to me and says, "Hey, did you hear about the police last night?" And Marshall says, "Yeah, I did hear about the police last night. I very much did. I was right around them. I saw the flashlights in the forest, and they flashed their lights in our faces. Yep, what about it?" He goes on to tell him that someone got stabbed last night in our area. This is kind of unheard of. Oshawa's got a bad reputation, but for the spot that they were at, it’s
